"Triangle of Life"

EXTRACT FROM DOUG COPP'S ARTICLE ON THE: "TRIANGLE OF LIFE"

My name is Doug Copp. I am the Rescue Chief and Disaster Manager of the American Rescue Team International (ARTI), the world's most experienced rescue team. The information in this article will save lives in an earthquake.

I have crawled inside 875 collapsed buildings, worked with rescue teams from 60 countries, founded rescue teams in several countries, and I am a member of many rescue teams from many countries.

I was the United Nations expert in Disaster Mitigation for two years. I have worked at every major disaster in the world since 1985, except for simultaneous disasters.

The first building I ever crawled inside of was a school in Mexico City during the 1985 earthquake. Every child was under its desk. Every child was crushed to the thickness of their bones. They could have survived by lying down next to their desks in the aisles. It was obscene, unnecessary and I wondered why the children were not in the aisles. I didn't at the time know that the children were told to hide under something.

Simply stated, when buildings collapse, the weight of the ceilings falling upon the objects or furniture inside crushes these objects, leaving a space or void next to them. This space is what I call the "triangle of life". The larger the object, the stronger, the less it will compact. The less the object compacts, the larger the void, the greater the probability that the person who is using this void for safety will not be injured. The next time you watch collapsed buildings, on television, count the "triangles" you see formed. They are everywhere. It is the most common shape, you will see, in a collapsed building.

TIPS FOR EARTHQUAKE SAFETY

1) Most everyone who simply "ducks and covers" WHEN BUILDINGS COLLAPSE are crushed to death. People who get under objects, like desks or cars, are crushed.

2) Cats, dogs and babies often naturally curl up in the fetal position. You should too in an earthquake. It is a natural safety/survival instinct. You can survive in a smaller void. Get next to an object, next to a sofa, next to a large bulky object that will compress slightly but leave a void next to it.

3) Wooden buildings are the safest type of construction to be in during an earthquake. Wood is flexible and moves with the force of the earthquake. If the wooden building does collapse, large survival voids are created. Also, the wooden building has less concentrated, crushing weight. Brick buildings will break into individual bricks. Bricks will cause many injuries but less squashed bodies than concrete slabs.

4) If you are in bed during the night and an earthquake occurs, simply roll off the bed. A safe void will exist around the bed. Hotels can achieve a much greater survival rate in earthquakes, simply by posting a sign on The back of the door of every room telling occupants to lie down on the floor, next to the bottom of the bed during an earthquake.

5) If an earthquake happens and you cannot easily escape by getting out the door or window, then lie down and curl up in the fetal position next to a sofa, or large chair.

6) Most everyone who gets under a doorway when buildings collapse is killed. How? If you stand under a doorway and the doorjamb falls forward or backward you will be crushed by the ceiling above. If the door jam falls sideways you will be cut in half by the doorway. In either case, you will be killed!

7) Never go to the stairs. The stairs have a different "moment of frequency" (they swing separately from the main part of the building). The stairs and remainder of the building continuously bump into each other until structural failure of the stairs takes place. The people who get on stairs before they fail are chopped up by the stair treads - horribly mutilated. Even if the building doesn't collapse, stay away from the stairs. The stairs are a likely part of the building to be damaged. Even if the stairs are not collapsed by the earthquake, they may collapse later when overloaded by fleeing people. They should always be checked for safety, even when the rest of the building is not damaged.

8) Get Near the Outer Walls Of Buildings Or Outside Of Them If Possible - It is much better to be near the outside of the building rather than the interior. The farther inside you are from the outside perimeter of the building the greater the probability that your escape route will be blocked.

9) People inside of their vehicles are crushed when the road above falls in an earthquake and crushes their vehicles; which is exactly what happened with the slabs between the decks of the Nimitz Freeway. The victims of the San Francisco earthquake all stayed inside of their vehicles. They were all killed. They could have easily survived by getting out and sitting or lying next to their vehicles. Everyone killed would have survived if they had been able to get out of their cars and sit or lie next to them. All the crushed cars had voids 3 feet high next to them, except for the cars that had columns fall directly across them.

10) I discovered, while crawling inside of collapsed newspaper offices and other offices with a lot of paper, that paper does not compact. Large voids are found surrounding stacks of paper.

Spread the word and save someones life... The Entire world is experiencing natural calamities so be prepared!

In 1996 we made a film, which proved my survival methodology to be correct. The Turkish Federal Government, City of Istanbul , University of Istanbul Case Productions and ARTI cooperated to film this practical, scientific test. We collapsed a school and a home with 20 mannequins inside.. Ten mannequins did "duck and cover," and ten mannequins I used in my "triangle of life" survival method. After the simulated earthquake collapse we crawled through the rubble and entered the building to film and document the results. The film, in which I practiced my survival techniques under directly observable, scientific conditions , relevant to building collapse, showed there would have been zero percent survival for those doing duck and cover.

There would likely have been 100 percent survivability for people using my method of the "triangle of life." This film has been seen by millions of viewers on television in Turkey and the rest of Europe , and it was seen in the USA , Canada and Latin America on the TV program Real TV

Listerine as Bug Spray????

I was at a deck party awhile back, and the bugs were having a ball biting everyone. A man at the party sprayed the lawn and deck floor with Listerine, and the little demons disappeared.

The next year I filled a 4-ounce spray bottle and used it around my seat whenever I saw mosquitoes. And voila! That worked as well.

It worked at a picnic where we sprayed the area around the food table, the children's swing area, and the standing water nearby.

During the summer, I don't leave home without it.....Pass it on.

OUR FRIEND'S COMMENTS: I tried this on my deck and around all of my doors. It works - in fact, it killed them instantly. I bought my bottle from Target and it cost me $1.89. It really doesn't take much, and it is a big bottle, too; so it is not as expensive to use as the can of Bug-spray you buy that doesn't last 30 minutes.

So, try this, please. It will last a couple of days. Don't spray directly on a wood door (like your front door), but spray around the frame. Spray around the window frames, and even inside the dog house.

He drops pounds overnight. You gain just by glancing at cheesecake. Here are the reasons for his success.

Think the most infuriating thing a guy can say to you is, "Yeah, it does make your butt look big"? Wrong.
The one phrase that can turn any relationship into a nuclear winter is: "I need to drop 5 pounds--I'll cut out the beer."
And here is the ugly truth: One beerless Patriots game and your guy is back in his high school gym shorts. You could forgo beer forever and be about as close to getting into your high school gym shorts as you are to fitting into one of Barbie's dream gowns. It's not fair.
Face it, guys are just losers. Well, better losers than we are. Even though we'd knock 'em dead in the Jeopardy! weight loss category--we know everything there is to know about calories and fitness--they have the physiological edge. When Paul Tasner decides to drop a few pounds, says his wife, Barbara Walter, an ambulatory surgery nurse and a wellness coach in the San Francisco area, it seems to happen overnight: "It looks like he had a belly suit on, and then a day later, he takes it off and there's a slim guy underneath. It really pisses me off."
Men's bigger muscle mass--in fact, their bigger-ness overall--helps them burn 30% more calories than we do, says nutritionist Cynthia Sass, RD, coauthor of Your Diet Is Driving Me Crazy. They have other advantages, too: For one, their hormones don't leave them waterlogged--and heavier--1 week a month. We generally have more body fat and are biologically more inclined to store it (possibly to nourish those dozen babies nature wants us to have). The bad habits guys overcome (beer and chips) seem to result in instant weight loss, while ours (mistaking a box of Ring Dings for a therapist) seem too emotionally hardwired to short-circuit. Finally, in the gym, they grab the big, macho barbells and do routines that make them grunt. Our weights tend to be pink...and puny.
But all is not, ahem, lost. We women may never have the biological or psychological weight loss advantages men enjoy, but we are clever enough to learn new tricks. In other words, if there's no way to beat them at the dieting game, we might as well join them. Here are five guy habits that can help you lose weight--and keep it off. Happily, none of them involves testosterone.
THE GUY THING
He doesn't crave sweets
Both men and women have cravings, and no, he doesn't have an easier time fighting them off. But your comfort food is likely to be chocolate, pudding, or a cheese Danish, while his is a thick, juicy steak. A recent Cornell University study found that women seek out sweets to ward off the blues; men turn to meat when they want to indulge. The advantage of his choice: It's protein, which will help fill him up far better than your coffee cake. A study published last year by researchers at the University of Washington School of Medicine found that the secret weight loss weapon of low-carb diets is protein, because it promotes satiety, the scientific term for fullness, which curbs overeating.
If cravings are your downfall, you have a choice of tactics here:
Eat a little protein When a craving hits, have low-fat string cheese, a low-fat turkey and cheese roll-up, or fat-free cottage cheese mixed with some cut-up fruit instead of a sweet.
Have protein-packed chocolate
Take a tip from Prevention weight loss advisor Holly Wyatt, MD, an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center: "When I'm craving chocolate, I have a chocolate-coated energy bar or another similar protein bar for 210 calories. I've gotten to the point where that tastes like candy to me." But not so good that she starts in on a second.

"He feels okay, maybe even good, and really enjoys that steak," laughs emotional-eating expert Edward Abramson, PhD, a professor emeritus of psychology at California State University and author of Body Intelligence. But he doesn't order another one--he climbs back on the weight loss wagon, no harm, no foul. The best way to beat that diet-busting trap:
Apply his 80% rule "Most guys avoid anything that even smacks of perfectionism," and that applies to dieting, too, says Pamela Peeke, MD, an assistant clinical professor of medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and author of Body for Life for Women. "When women start a diet, they go from zero to 100--they become 'perfect' overnight, which is a hallmark of failure. That's why I developed the 80% rule: Hit your weight loss goals 80% every single day you can. One day, it'll be 120% because it happens to be a great day. Other days, you'll hit 50% or even 20% when you're dealing with PMS. Just make sure it averages out to 80%."

Help Save our State Parks!

Last Wednesday, the steps of the Trenton State House were the scene of a concrete camp-out -- over 300 people rallied to save our state parks from Gov. Corzine's budget cuts.

The same day, the Governor's staff was testifying to the Legislature, saying the Governor supports "passive recreation" at the nine state parks targeted for closure. But they would still ban swimming and camping.

The next day, the Governor proposed corporate sponsorship for state parks. So, we're starting to have an impact. But the Governor still doesn't get it -- New Jersey state parks should not be only partially open or sold to the highest bidder. The Legislature is starting to get the message. Make sure your state senator holds the line on keeping all of our state parks open.

Earth Day Groceries Project

The Washington Elementary School PTO is proud to announce the participation of our school in the 14th annual Earth Day Groceries Project!

Students at our school will be decorating paper grocery bags, generously provided by Shoprite in Fair Lawn, with environmental messages and pictures. Upon their completion, the bags will be collected and returned to Shoprite in Fair Lawn where they will be handed out to shoppers, upon checkout, on Earth Day, April 22nd.

Inaddition to displaying our students artwork, the people in our community will get a clear and positive message that the students of Washington Elementary School, and Shoprite of Fair Lawn, care about the environment.

Cpl. Ugliono pays students a visit

Upon hearing of injuries endured by Cpl. Shane Ugliono in Iraq, Chairperson of Public Relations and Friendship, Mrs. Colleen Washburn, approached Washington Elementary School principal, Mrs. Michelle Gadaletta, in reference to students sending cards to Cpl Ugliono while he was recuperating.

With Mrs. Gadaletta's permission and the assistance of faculty and staff, that's just what the students of Washington Elementary did!

Cpl. Ugliono was so appreciative of the gesture that once released from the hospital, he visited the students, staff and faculty on March 20th.

During his visit, students were not only given the opportunity to ask questions of Cpl. Ugliono, but also to express their gratitude to him for his tour of duty in Iraq.

I received the following list of "good things to know" in an email, and some of them I found surprising, some I found interesting and all I found good enough to share.

Peel a banana from the bottom and you won't have to pick the little "stringy things" off of it. That's how the primates do it..
Take your bananas apart when you get home from the store. If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster.
Store your opened chunks of cheese in aluminum foil. They will stay fresh much longer and not mold!
Peppers with 3 bumps on the bottom are sweeter and better for eating.. Peppers with 4 bumps on the bottom are firmer and better for cooking.
Add a teaspoon of water when frying ground beef. It will help pull the grease away from the meat while cooking.
To really make scrambled eggs or omelets rich add a couple of spoonfuls of sour cream, cream cheese, or heavy cream and then beat them up.
For a cool brownie treat, make brownies as directed. Melt Andes mints in double broiler and pour over warm brownies. Let it set for a wonderful minty frosting.
Add garlic immediately to a recipe if you want a light taste of garlic and at the end of the recipe if your want a stronger taste of garlic.
Leftover snickers bars from Halloween make a delicious dessert. Simple chop them up with the food chopper. Peel, core and slice a few apples. Place them in a baking dish and sprinkle the chopped candy bars over the apples. Bake at 350 for 15 minutes!!! Serve alone or with vanilla ice cream.
Reheat Pizza Heat up leftover pizza in a nonstick skillet on top of the stove, set heat to med-low and heat till warm.. This keeps the crust crispy. No soggy micro pizza. I saw this on the cooking channel and it really works.
For easy Deviled eggs, put cooked egg yolks in a zip lock bag. Seal, mash till they are all broken up. Add remainder of ingredients, reseal, keep mashing it up mixing thoroughly, cut the tip of the baggy, squeeze mixture into egg. Just throw bag away when done easy clean up..
To expand frosting, whip it with your mixer for a few minutes. You can double it in size. You get to frost more cake/cupcakes with the same amount. You also eat less sugar and calories per serving.
Reheating refrigerated bread? Warming biscuits, pancakes, or muffins that were refrigerated? Place them in a microwave with a cup of water. The increased moisture will keep the food moist and help it reheat faster.
Newspaper keeps weeds away. Start putting in your plants; work the nutrients in your soil. Wet newspapers put layers around the plants overlapping as you go cover with mulch and forget about weeds. Weeds will get through some gardening plastic they will not get through wet newspapers.
Broke a glass? Use a wet cotton ball or Q-tip to pick up the small shards of glass you can't see easily.
No More Mosquitoes! Place a dryer sheet in your pocket. It will keep the mosquitoes away.
Squirrel Away! To keep squirrels from eating your plants sprinkle your plants with cayenne pepper. The cayenne pepper doesn't hurt the plant and the squirrels won't come near it.
To get something out of a heat register or under the fridge, add an empty paper towel roll or empty gift wrap roll to your vacuum. It can be bent or flattened to get in narrow openings.
Reduce static cling by putting a small safety pin to the seam of your slip and you will not have a clingy skirt or dress. Same thing works with slacks that cling when wearing panty hose. Plac e pin in seam of slacks and -- ta da! static is gone.
Measuring Cups - Before you pour a sticky substance into a measuring cup, fill with hot water. Dump out the hot water, but don't dry cup. Next, add your ingredient, such as peanut butter, and watch how easily it comes right out.
Foggy Windshield? Hate foggy windshields? Buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in the glove box of your car. When the windows fog, rub with the eraser! Works better than a cloth!
To re-open a sealed envelope, just place your sealed envelope in the freezer for an hour or two. Viola! It unseals easily.
Use your hair conditioner to shave your legs. It's a lot cheaper than shaving cream and leaves your legs really smooth. It's also a great way to use up the conditioner you bought but didn't like when you tried it in your hair.
Goodbye Fruit Flies! To get rid of pesky fruit flies, take a small glass fill it 1/2" with Apple Cider Vinegar and 2 drops of dish washing liquid, mix well. You will find those flies drawn to the cup and gone forever!
Get rid of ants, put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it, take it "home," can't digest it so it kills them. It may take a week or so, especially if it rains, but it works & you don't have the worry about pets or small children being harmed!
INFO ABOUT CLOTHES DRYERS! The heating unit went out on my dryer! The gentleman that fixes things around the house for us told us that he wanted to show us something and he went over to the dryer and pulled out the lint filter. It was clean. (I always clean the lint from the filter after every load clothes.) He told us that he wanted to show us something; he took the filter over to the sink, ran hot water over it. The lint filter is made of a mesh material - I'm sure you know what your dryer's lint filter looks like. Well,...the hot water just sat on top of the mesh! It didn't go through it at all! He told us that dryer sheets cause a film over that mesh that's what burns out the heating unit. You can't SEE the film, but it's there. It's what is in the dryer sheets to make your clothes soft and static free -- that nice fragrance too, you know how they can feel waxy when you take them out of the box, well t his stuff builds up on your clothes and on your lint screen. This is also what causes dryer units to catch fire & potentially burn your house down with it! He said the best way to keep your dryer working for a very long time (& to keep your electric bill lower) is to take that filter out & wash it with hot soapy water & an old toothbrush (or other brush) at least every six months. He said that makes the life of the dryer at least twice as long! How about that!?! Learn something new everyday! I certainly didn't know dryer sheets would do that. So, I thought I 'd share! Note: I went to my dryer & tested my screen by running water on it. The water ran through a little bit but mostly collected all the water in the mesh screen. I washed it with warm soapy water & a nylon brush & I had it done in 30 seconds. Then when I rinsed it the water ran right thru the screen! There wasn't any pudding at all! That repairman knew what he was talking about!

Health Barn USA

As part of our Nutrition curriculum, Ms. Antine of Health Barn USA visited our school on November 30th.

Although we did encounter some logistical issues, this was one assembly that our students continued to talk about for weeks after its presentation.

Each and every of our more than 200 students were treated to a Sampling of foods from each major food group. It was like a "Kiddie Cocktail Party".

My nephew and his girlfriend are an "organic living" couple so I had a hard time this past Christmas finding the "perfect" gift for them......until I saw Oprah's holiday show.

Catching up....

I won't even attempt to make excuses for my lack of posts, I'll just jump right in and try to update you on what's been happening!

First, I'd like to report, happily I may add, that the Hawthorne Education Foundation's 1st Annual Ducky Derby was wildly successful and raised $5,800.00 for our public schools. There were some minor glitches that will need to be worked out for this year's derby, but the event was greatly atteneded by our town and was enjoyed by all!

On a personal note, my little one has turned 7, has become a cheerleader, and (thank goodness for the safetly of her rear) is doing very well in the first grade.

Our PTO's Vendor/Craft Fair was also enjoyed by all and raised some much needed money for our small school. I believe next time around we are going to change the location so that we get some more street traffic.

I'm going to TRY to do a better job with posting, but I can't promise!!!! Work, PTO, motherhood and wifehood seem to eat up much of my time! Go figure!

Although I'm not quite sure I am receiving email from Baby Center, the subject line of this email caught my attention.

These are some REALLY SIMPLE things we can all do to be more Earth friendly.

Green parenting: 20 small steps that make a big difference

We all want to protect the planet. After all, our children's future is at stake, as well as our own. But for most moms and dads, hybrid minivans and solar panels are out of reach — and who has the energy to give up diapers or dishwashers?
The good news is, small changes can make a big difference. (Consider: If all 4 million BabyCenter monthly visitors swapped one regular light bulb for a fluorescent one, the carbon dioxide savings would roughly equal taking 76,000 cars off the road.)
We went to top environmental experts to get their best tips for busy parents and parents-to-be. Their advice will help you leave the world a healthier place for your child and save you money to boot. What could be better than that?
In your home
Make your fridge efficient
"The single biggest electricity user in your house is the refrigerator," says Lisa Moore, climate and air scientist at Environmental Defense, who notes that you can reduce the energy drain with a few simple tricks. Cleaning the coils every six months will help you use less energy and save money. (Flip up or remove the kick plate or toe grill, and clean with a vacuum attachment or bottle brush. Make sure to unplug the fridge or turn off its circuit breaker first.) So will keeping the fridge set between 38 and 40 degrees and the freezer between 0 and 5 degrees — the settings where it's most efficient.
Stop standby waste
Unplugging TVs, DVD players, computers, and other major electronics when they're not in use could keep thousands of pounds of carbon dioxide out of the air each year, according to Al Gore's site An Inconvenient Truth. (Even when they're turned off, their standby consumption is about equal to running a light bulb continuously.)
To avoid the hassle of constantly plugging and unplugging, here's an easy solution: Plug several electronics onto one power strip and switch it off. As for small gadgets like cell phones, digital cameras, and hand-held vacuums — once they're charged, keep them unplugged until needed.
Light up right
"Switching from traditional incandescent bulbs to fluorescent is the easiest and most cost-efficient fix for saving energy," says actress Rachelle Carson-Begley, wife of actor and eco-activist Ed Begley Jr. Even though fluorescent bulbs cost more, you'll save up to $60 in energy bills over the lifetime of the bulb.
If you don't like the look of fluorescent, switch out the garage and hall lights, and save the mood lighting for bedrooms and bathrooms. Or, mix iridescent and fluorescent in multibulb fixtures.
Flush water waste
A whopping 40 percent of the water used in your home goes down the toilet. A low-flow toilet can cut the amount you use by half or more (and yes, it'll work just as well).
A low-tech alternative: Put a brick or plastic milk jug filled with pebbles in the tank. The space it takes up reduces the amount of water needed to fill the tank, so you'll save gallons (and money) with each flush.
Fix drips and leaks
A leaky faucet? Time to call the plumber. That slow but steady drip, drip, drip can waste up to 20 gallons of water a day.
Extra credit: Replacing standard faucets and showerheads with low-flow versions will help a family of four save 20,000 gallons a year.
There are plenty of other small but significant ways to conserve, says Joanna Yarrow, author of 1001 Ways to Help the Earth. "Keep a pitcher of water in the fridge so you don't waste water as you wait for it to get cold from the tap," she recommends. "And turn the water off when brushing your teeth."
Use dishwasher smarts
"A lot of people think washing by hand is more environmentally friendly than running a dishwasher," says Yarrow. Not necessarily so. You can save up to 20 gallons of water a day by waiting till your dishwasher's full to switch it on. You'll save even more energy by letting dishes air dry on the racks instead of using the heat dry cycle. Plus, most new dishwashers don't need you to prerinse. Simply scrape off food and load, and you'll conserve another 20 gallons.And if you're in the market for a new dishwasher (or any appliance), look for the Energy Star label. It'll save you more than $40 a year in utility bills, and many power companies offer rebates as well.
Wash in cold
"By washing clothes in cold water rather than warm or hot," says EcoMom Alliance president Kimberly Danek-Pinkson, "you can eliminate 500 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions a year." (Bonus: Your clothes will last longer.)
If cold water isn't going to cut it with your kid's grimy duds, opting for warm water over hot still saves energy and gets clothes clean.To make laundry day even more energy-efficient, wait until you have a full load. Danek-Pinkson also advises rethinking what constitutes dirty. "Kids go through lots of outfits that wind up on the floor, and then you toss them in the laundry basket," she says. "Ask yourself, 'Is this really dirty?' If not, think of all the energy you'll spare — for the planet and yourself — by not washing them."
Get the lint out
"If you clean out the lint filter of your clothes dryer before each load, you'll reduce your energy use by up to 30 percent," says Jennifer Hattam, green living expert for the Sierra Club. (That's nothing to sneeze at, considering the dryer is one of the biggest energy hogs in the house.)
As with the washer, waiting till you have a full load saves lots of energy.
Adjust the thermostat
"Turning the thermostat just two degrees up or down saves a lot of energy and money," says Earth Day Network president Kathleen Rogers, who headed up the Two Degree Campaign.
Rogers recommends setting that thermostat dial to 68 degrees in winter and 72 in the summer. For winter nights, lower to 65 degrees and pile on the blankets. And if possible, opt for an energy-efficient fan instead of air conditioning during summer.
On the road
Pump up tires
"If you'd properly inflate your tires, you could reduce global warming and have cleaner air to breath," says Savannah Waters, who founded Pump 'Em Up at age 9.
She makes a good point. If all American drivers kept their tires at the recommended pressure, we'd save about 4 million gallons of gas a day (and our tires would last longer, too).
Drive smart
When waiting to pick up kids after school or soccer practice, you'll spare the air — and the lungs of the children waiting for their rides — if you don't let your car idle. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends turning off your engine if you're going to be in one place for more than 30 seconds.
Also, be a steady driver. By avoiding sudden braking and acceleration, you'll increase fuel efficiency by as much as 40 percent. And if you set your highway cruising speed to 55 to 60 miles per hour, you'll save even more gas."Driving the speed limit and at a steady speed, without sudden stops and starts, is safer for you and your children anyway," Jennifer Hattam points out.
Plan your trip (or just walk)
Given that roughly a quarter of daily car trips are one mile or less, there's a health-friendly alternative way to get to the local market or park.
"Get out of your car," says Rachelle Carson-Begley. "Walk a little and get your exercise." And when you do climb into your car, plan your trip so you hit all your stops along the most efficient route — you'll save time, money, and gas.
Trim your trash
Rethink the baby wipes
Most baby wipes take several hundred years to break down, says Joanna Yarrow. Considering the number of wipes used in the United States (about 5,000 per baby), that's a lot of landfill.
The most earth- and baby-friendly alternative, Yarrow says, is to make your own by cutting cotton fabric into small squares and washing them when dirty. At the very least, when just a quick swipe of a wipe is needed for easy cleanups, rip a wipe in half.
Bring your own bag
It takes 12 million barrels of oil, and 14 million trees, to make all the paper and plastic bags Americans go through each year.
Next time you shop, take cloth bags (keep a few in the trunk to have on hand). Or just reuse — sturdy plastic bags or double-bagged paper ones hold up for months, and they're free.
Extra credit: Reuse plastic produce bags, or pick up a few cloth ones (you'll find them at Reusablebags.com).
Break the bottle habit
Making and even recycling plastic water bottles uses energy and releases pollution, and every year, millions of them wind up in landfill. It's not worth the waste, argues Gina Solomon, senior scientist for the National Resources Defense Council. "Bottled water is often just tap water with a fancy label and a high price, and it's not any better for you," she says.
In fact, Consumer Reports found that about a quarter of bottled water comes from the tap. A more earth-friendly alternative is to fill reusable aluminum or stainless steel bottles with tap. If you're concerned about water quality or don't like the taste, try a filter (our food safety area has info on the various kinds).
Buy recycled paper
Yes, it costs more. But the paper industry is the third largest contributor to global warming, according to StopGlobalWarming.org.
If your budget doesn't allow for it, try to reuse. For instance, take home used paper from the office and use the clean side for to-do lists, phone messages, and art projects — and then toss it in the recycle bin.
RecycleIt sounds old-fashioned to mention recycling — until you consider that an incredible 69 percent of Americans still don't do it. For tips, including what's recyclable in your town, go to Earth 911.
Extra credit: Try to steer clear of food and toys wrapped in excess packaging.
Have a kid swap party
No, we're not suggesting you trade in your temperamental toddler. In the spirit of community and recycling, Grist president Chip Giller swaps kid items with other parents. "All our friends are having kids now, and we pass clothes and toys from one person to another," he says. If you make a party out of it, you get a twofer: new duds and toys, plus plenty of fun.

Managing Difficult People

Is there someone in your workplace a dominant manager, a difficult co-worker, or maybe even a demanding client or customer who drives you crazy? If you have to work with difficult people every day, you probably dread going to work each morning. What's more, you might get so stressed that you can't concentrate on the job.

Difficult people and situations exist in every workplace. They all have one thing in common. You must address them.

Characterizing them can help separate the person from the behavior. Difficult people can be characterised as follows:

The snake can gossip about or criticize others' personal lives or engage in inappropriate public disagreements. This can pollute personal relations and the work environment, and bring the organization into disrepute.
The shark can display similar characteristics to the snake but acts subversively, such as withholding information, advancing irrational excuses for incomplete work, and harassing colleagues.
The wild cat is often unseen at work. They may have a history of withholding information or advancing ridiculous excuses for incomplete work and poor performance, about which they can be defensive. They may refuse to do some work, sabotage the work of others and reject being managed by anyone. They can attract undue management time and cause colleagues stress and frustration.
The hyena can be rude, aggressive, domineering and negative about people, always blaming others and never taking responsibility for their own actions. There can be complaints about them, colleagues can become tense and disaffected, and sickness and absence rates can rise.

Most importantly, if you are embroiled in a constant conflict at work, you may not only get blamed for being "unable to handle the situation like a mature professional," you may be labeled as a "difficult" person, too. If the situation continues to deteriorate over time, the organization and your boss may tire of you, and you could lose your job.

So how can you keep yourself immune to these problem co-workers? An obvious way of dealing with traumatic people is to just stay away from them. And where this is feasible, it usually works.

However, there are four problems with this approach. One is that it's not always possible to avoid people, particularly if you work or live with them. Second, if you avoid people who are still in your orbit, you may find yourself looking over your shoulder to make sure they're not nearby. The third is that you don't learn how to deal with the person if you simply skirt around the problem. It won't help you to develop better coping strategies. And fourth, you could actually end up magnifying your stress when you do see them.

So, when avoidance doesn't do the trick, here are some tips for handling difficult people at work:

Stand up to overly aggressive people. Like the hyena, stand up to them, but don't fight. Overly aggressive people expect others to either run away from them or react with rage. Your goal is simply to assertively express your own views, not try to win a battle of right and wrong. First, wait for the person to run out of some steam. Then call the person by name and assert your opinions with confidence.
Beware of bad bosses. Bosses are in charge, whether you like it or not. If your intention is to keep your job, you will have to learn how to get along with an arrogant or controlling boss. If you need to confront your boss, avoid putting him or her on the defensive. This is too risky a situation to put yourself in.
Take concrete action. Once you are fully aware of what is happening, deciding to live with the situation long-term is rarely an option. Your situation won't improve unless you do something about it. Let the co-worker in question knows that you are on to his or her game and that you will escalate it to a higher authority if necessary. Don't let the problem aggravate. Make sure to take action swiftly. You may eventually become so angry that your efforts to address the situation could become irrational. It's far better to tackle the problem while you can maintain some objectivity and emotional control.
Never sink to their level. Some no-no's: sending anonymous notes, gossiping about the person or bad-mouthing him or her to the boss.
Make the first move. If you approach a difficult person with the belief that he or she is as eager as you are to restore harmony, you can make the first move. Start your conversation with such as "I'm sorry for what I may have done to hurt you," or, "I could be wrong."
Preserve your reputation. Constant complaining about the situation can quickly earn you the title of "office grouch." Managers might wonder why you're unable to solve your own problems, even if their tolerance of the situation is part of the problem. If you are embroiled in a constant conflict at work, you may end up getting blamed for other problems.
Always agree to disagree. If you personally dislike a co-worker or boss, you can still learn from their opinions, viewpoints and ideas. If you can find something to appreciate about them, comment on it in a favorable way.

Remember, it's always better to check your fight, flight or freeze reactions and refuse to be a part of a duel in which you're an inadvertent participant. Sure, you need to stand up for yourself, but do so without demanding that you be above criticism at all costs. Remind yourself of your long-range goals: saving time, energy, hassle and maybe even your own hide.

I have to say, this year, I couldn't be happier that summer has arrived. My "queen" has just completed kindergarten and WOW, what a year.

Symmetry in kindergarten? Couldn't believe it. What our kids are learning in school at such an early age is ABSOLUTELY mind-blowing.

Not only for my sake, but also for my daughter's, I couldn't be happier that the summer has finally arrived. After 180 days of non-stop work, I think the little bugger deserves a summer break.

Tight vs. Wrinkled Skin: The Choice Is Yours

Good news: wherever you naturally fall on the tight vs. wrinkled skin scale (and there are, no doubt, genetic factors that influence how we age), lifestyle choices can make a big difference.

First, let's get a sense of what we're up against. Your dermis - the deeper layer of your skin - is where wrinkle-causing changes take place. Those changes are due primarily to the deterioration of your skin's three main structural components:

Collagen: gives skin its durability
Elastin: gives skin its resilience and bounce
Hyaluronic acid: holds water and gives skin its volume

As we age, each of these three components decreases, and there's no way around that. Women will notice this most during the first five years after menopause, when collagen can decrease by as much as 30 percent. But there are plenty of things we can do to ensure that we don't lose 'em any faster than necessary:

Avoid outside influences that degrade the structure of your dermis, among them smoking, sun exposure, and poor nutrition.
As I've mentioned in the past, make antioxidants a regular part of your day - first and foremost through diet, and also in the form of topical skin serums (look for these in dropper-style bottles) or moisturizers. Some of the most common are vitamins C and E, lycopene, green tea, and coenzyme Q10.
Help stimulate your skin's natural collagen production - and slough off dead skin cells that inhibit maximum absorption of serums and lotions - with cleansers that contain alpha hydroxy acids (like glycolic or lactic acid).
Look for other skin care ingredients that can stimulate your skin to produce more collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid on its own. Retinoids, vitamin C, and copper peptide have all been shown to do just that.
Drink lots of water. The enzymes in your skin need water to work properly. Look for the many new waters out there with added antioxidant ingredients - or add an "antioxidant booster" to your water. Drinking iced green tea is another option.

Annual Spring Concert

As you may know, Congress has proclaimed 2007 the "YEAR OF POLIO AWARENESS."
I am writing to ask you to help polio survivors and all children by having September 2007 proclaimed POLIO AWARENESS MONTH.

There are two areas about which everyone needs to be aware:

Polio Vaccination Awareness: In the past two years, polio has been reported in five unvaccinated Minnesota children and in one unvaccinated Arizona adult. Unfortunately, the polio vaccine has been a victim of its own success, allowing parents to think that polio is "cured" and vaccination unnecessary. It is feared that the recent US polio cases are canaries in the mineshaft. The CDC reports that 10% of US toddlers under 3 years old -- one million children -- are not vaccinated against polio, with vaccination lowest in poor cities.

The appearance of polio in the U.S. again is especially frightening since polio has broken free of international vaccination efforts, with cases increasing in 2007 in India, Africa and appearing in previously polio-free countries, such as Namibia. Even more frightening, not everyone infected with the poliovirus exhibits symptoms. For every case of paralytic polio, there are between 70 and 200 "silent carriers" of the poliovirus. What will happen when a polio-infected individual from a foreign country lands in a densely populated city like New York, where an estimated 23,000 toddlers are unvaccinated? Every child must be vaccinated since America's next polio epidemic could be just a plane ride away.

Even more disturbing, 19 states now offer not just religious exemptions, but "philosophical exemptions," to vaccination. Arkansas' recent passage of legislation allowing "philosophical exemptions" was followed by a 26% drop in vaccinations. States should not allow "philosophical exemptions" to polio vaccination at the same time polio has broken free of international vaccination efforts.

Post-Polio Sequelae Awareness: In taking about polio vaccination, it should not be forgotten, as it was 50 years ago, that there are still nearly two million North Americans alive today who had polio during the epidemics of the 1940's, 50's and early 60's. At least 70 percent of paralytic polio survivors and 40 percent of nonparalytic polio survivors are developing Post-Polio Sequelae, unexpected and often disabling symptoms that occur about 35 years after the poliovirus attack, including overwhelming fatigue, muscle weakness, muscle and joint pain, sleep disorders, heightened sensitivity to anesthesia, cold and pain, and difficulty swallowing and breathing.

Unfortunately, polio survivors and health professionals are not aware that PPS exist and are readily treated by reducing physical overexertion, "conserving to preserve" polio survivors' remaining poliovirus-damaged neurons, and not by exercising and the "use it or lose it" treatment polio survivors received 50 years ago. Polio survivors and health professionals need to be aware of the cause and treatment of PPS.

What will happen when a polio-infected individual from a foreign country lands in a densely populated city like New York, where an estimated 23,000 toddlers are unvaccinated? Every child must be vaccinated since America's next polio epidemic could be just a plane ride away.

Post-Polio Sequelae Awareness: In promoting about polio vaccination, it should not be forgotten, as it was 50 years ago, that there are still nearly two million North Americans alive today who had polio during the epidemics of the 1940's, 50's and early 60's. At least 70 percent of paralytic polio survivors and 40 percent of nonparalytic polio survivors are developing Post-Polio Sequelae, unexpected and often disabling symptoms that occur about 35 years after the poliovirus attack, including overwhelming fatigue, muscle weakness, muscle and joint pain, sleep disorders, heightened sensitivity to anesthesia, cold and pain, and difficulty swallowing and breathing

Unfortunately, polio survivors and health professionals are not aware that PPS exist and are readily treated by reducing physical overexertion and "conserving to preserve" polio survivors' remaining poliovirus-damaged neurons, and not by exercising and the "use it or lose it" treatment polio survivors received 50 years ago. Polio survivors and health professionals need to be aware of the cause and treatment of PPS.

Last week, my daughter had a week off of school and to keep boredom at bay, we "ran" the playdate scene for most of the week.

Wednesday was my turn to host and so the whole gang was here.

Amazingly to me, most of the moms thought my "shoe basket" idea was great, so, I figured I'd share it with all.

Truly an idea born of necessity, I have two basket by my back door, ('cause of course, we are good Italians and use the back door as our main entrance), that are used exclusively to rally our shoes. I have a large, oval, laundry basket for my husband's and my own shoes, and a smaller one that is for the "Queens" , aka my daughter, shoes.

Apparently, this is a great idea.....who knew??? LOL!

Today's makeup can do more than just hide our imperfections. The following are some tips and tricks for your eyes that Sephora recommends.

ELONGATED EYES - Use an eyeliner brush to concentrate shadow close to the upper lash lines, dragging the color slightly past the outer corner of the eye to visually elongate the eyelids. Use a bright color for extra oomph.

YOUNGER-LOOKING EYES - Visually open and lift the eyes by using a pale shadow on the upper lids. Steer clear of powders since they can sink into wrinkles, emphasizing them.

BRIGHTER EYES - Make the whites of your eyes, and the flecks in your iris, glow with shadow, liner or mascara that has blue undertones.

WIDER APART EYES - Smudge dark shadow on the outer corners of the upper and lower lids. By gently smudging the line, the color will appear more diffused to further draw eyes apart.

DEEPER CREASES - Add depth to nonexistent creases or hooded lids with a shadow palette. Apply light shadow to the entire lid. Look into the mirror and blend a medium tone shadow in the indentation, between the eyeball and orbital bone. A primer and budgeproof mascara will help makeup stay put.

BIGGER EYES - If you've got smaller eyes use a white eye pencil on the inner-rims of the eyes to extend the whites of your eyes, making them appear larger.

While doing some research, I came across the following article, thought it was interesting and that I should share it.

GLA: One Nutrient - Multiple Benefits

For many years, women have gone out of their way to consume a certain omega-6 essential fatty acid (EFA) found in borage oil (24% GLA), evening primrose oil (EPO, 9% GLA) and others.
The essential fatty acid is gamma linoleic acid (GLA). The benefits of this nutrient are numerous and long-established. They include helping with premenstrual syndrome, hormone synthesis, healthy blood pressure, weight loss and joint function, as well as improving the condition of your hair, skin and nails.
How much to consume, and in what ratio to the omega-3 essential fatty acids EPA and DHA, on the other hand, is somewhat controversial.Now in a recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers have helped to clarify this matter and prove another major benefit.In this study, 31 healthy women were assigned to one of four groups:
Group One received only 4 grams daily of EPA/ DHA
Group Two received 4 grams of EPA/DHA, along with 1 gram of GLA (ratio 4:1)
Group Three was given 4 grams of EPA/DHA with 2 grams of GLA (ratio 4:2)
Group Four was given equal amounts of EPA/ DHA, along with GLA (4 grams each, ratio 4:4)
The study was conducted for a total of four weeks. It was found that those women who took essential fatty acids in the ratio of 4:2 and 4:4 (groups 3 & 4) had a tendency of reduction of LDL ("bad") cholesterol of approximately 12% over the 4-week study. When researchers used statistical analysis, it was estimated that the ideal combination of the omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids lowered the risk of myocardial infarction over a ten-year period by up to 43%. This is absolutely amazing when you consider the low cost and safety of these products. We hear a lot about men's risk of heart disease, but more women die each year from heart disease (over ½ million) than men. The risk of women suffering from and dying due to heart disease is far greater than dying from all forms of cancer combined and many times greater than death from breast cancer.
Over the last several years, there have also been multiple studies published in the medical literature indicating that fish oil (omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA) can reduce the risk of heart disease, including sudden death. In a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers have found that the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil may improve cardiovascular function by keeping your arteries flexible. Other studies have proven the benefits of omega-3 EFAs for improving mood and promoting healthy vision. Vitacost proudly offers a product from Nutraceutical Sciences Institute (NSI) called Complete EFA. It contains a blend of several essential omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, including alpha linolenic acid, EPA/DHA from fish oil, GLA from borage oil, and linoleic acid. The ratio of EPA/DHA to GLA is approximately 4:3, which seems to be in the most ideal range, according to the study cited above. Three softgels a day provides about 350 mg of EPA/DHA and 288 mg of GLA, along with about 700 mg of ALA (which converts into omega-3) and 620 mg of linoleic acid.

The young and fair-skinned are at greater
risk(HealthDay News) -- Certain people are more susceptible to sunburn than
others because of age, skin type or medications they are taking. The U.S.
National Library of Medicine says these factors increase a person's risk of
sunburn:
Babies and children have skin that is more sensitive than adult
skin, so they are more likely to be badly sunburned if unprotected.

People with fair skin are more likely to get a
sunburn than people with darker skin -- although all skin types and complexions
can burn.
Certain medications, including some antibiotics and birth control
pills, can increase the likelihood of a sunburn.

Using a tanning bed can cause dangerous
sunburns.
Being outside during the sun's peak hours -- 10:00 a.m. to 4:00
p.m. -- and being on reflective sand or water can increase one's risk of severe
sunburn.

Creative Ideas

This past Saturday our municipal Enviornmental Committe hosted a Earth Day Celebration at our local high-school.

On display were projects created by our local school children that were made entirely from recyclable materials.

One creative pair made a table top pool table from paper towel rolls, paper, and tin cans. Also on hand was a bowling game made with empty soda bottles. One of my favorites.....a simple but GREAT reusable project. A liquid fabric softener bottle decorated with paint and with holes drilled in the lid to be used as a watering can. The kids really put a lot of effort into their projects and it showed. Very creative bunch.

The municipal shade tree commission also offered violets and a dogwood tree for raffle as well as offering seedlings and information on their care.

With summer days quickly approaching, my daughter and I got some great summer project ideas.

Take Voting Out of Public Schools!

In light of Monday's shooting at Virginia Tech, I find it completely incomprehensible that the County of Passaic, or any county for that matter, allows voting to take place in our public schools during school hours.

Who or what is going to stop an unstable "voter" from attacking either the staff and/or students? In this day and age, it's a necessity that our children be made aware of "stranger danger", yet during elections, we allow complete strangers access to our public schools.

Normally, my daughter's school is locked down like Fort Knox. You need to ring a bell and stand before a security camera in order to gain entry. During elections, strangers are allowed to enter this same school at will.

The idea that designated voting locations need to be a certain mileage from individual homes is absolutely ludicrous. Those who truly wish to vote will not be deterred from doing so just because they need to travel a few extra blocks.

Why is it that the convenience of voters is weighed more heavily than that of the youngsters and staff of our public schools?

I implore the residents of Passaic County, and every other county, to demand that the safety of our students, and our school staff be placed above mere the convenience of voters.

I know that I've discussed this topic previously, but I can not believe how many moms out there are wasting time food shopping.

I know it sounds pompous, but you really need to give food shopping online a try. With Shop rite, for $10.00, they'll do your grocery shopping for you. For an additional $4.95, they'll deliver it. Personally, I prefer to pick mine up since you can only use your coupons if you're picking up your order.

I PROMISE you that shopping online will save you way more than the $10.00 it costs to have the store do your shopping for you. Since you aren't aimless wandering the aisles, there is no chance of buying items that you really don't need or want. No only that, since you won't be in the store with your child(ren), there is also no "Mom, I REAAAAAAAALLLLLLLYYYYYY want that, I SWEAR I'll eat it." nonsense.

I know that as a working mom whom has become very involved with the PTO, I just don't have the time to waste in the food store shopping. Not to mention, standing in line for a half hour or more, just to check out.

Yesterday, a friend and I went to Sasha's Salon and Day Spa for facials, and I have to tell you the experience was pure bliss. Not only did I get a facial, but the esthetician massaged my arms, hands, feet, and upper back. The cherry on top???? A paraffin treatment for both my hands and feet.
This was my first spa experience at Sasha's, normally (you know, the two previous times I've had spa services performed.....I'm a well-versed spa expert, no?) I go to Beyond and I thought that was heaven, but this experience left me believing that a visit to Beyond is purgatory versus my heavenly experience at Sasha's.

Just as I was bragging how my little one escaped the cold and flu season completely healthy................BAAAAAAMMMM!
Poor little thing came down with the strep the week before last and then last week got bit by the stomach flu.
How very pathetic the last two weeks have been in our house.
I am happy to report that she is now feeling better and that I am getting back on track.

My husband and I are tossing around the idea of having a backyard Laua party this summer. Seeing as I have OCD and EVERYTHING must be PERFECT, we hare already throwing around ideas as far as decorations, food, drinks, music, etc.

I can't say that I was a fan, not to say that I disliked her, but I do have to admit that her untimely death has me completely FASCINATED!
Some reports claim that she's been on a downward spiral since the death of son, and that I can completely understand. Parents aren't suppose to bury their children. It's unnatural. But what What I can't seem to understand, being a mother myself, is how she could be so reckless with her well-being while having to care for a 5 month old baby.
I'm not much of a celebrity "watcher", but I have to admit that this story has me glued to the television reports as well as searching the net for whatever updates are available.
I am also having a hard time swallowing that since her "personal involvement" (for lack of better wording) with Howard K. Stern both Daniel Smith and Anna Nicole Smith are both deceased.
Also, the reactions of both her mother and sister have completely DISGUSTED me. What type of people make the remarks they have made, publicly, upon hearing of her death? Are you people kidding me? No matter what discord there may have been between them and no matter how "fast" Anna Nicole's lifestyle may have been, she is still their blood......a daughter.....a sister...a mother...and more importantly, a human being. I was completely appalled by their lack of emotion and can only hope that Dannylyn does not wind up being raised by two such heartless women.

Ok, so I've gained some weight and due to the fact that I've had a run of breathing problems, working out is somewhat difficult for me currently, so, being the control freak that I am, I've started researching diet aids to see what I can possibly do to aid in my war against my extra weight.

As you all know, Ephedra seems to be THE BIG DIET AID. My question to all of you is this......is this herbal concoction as dangerous as they say? Have you or someone you know used a supplement containing ephedra and had an adverse effect?

Scrubbing Bubbles????

If you're a "regular" visit here, I'm sure by now that you have ascertained that I ADORE products that aid and/or cut down cleaning time. People tell me I have OCD, but I just like to have my house presentable.......you never know who'll
pop-in.
Now, keeping in mind my love of helpful products, I purchased the "Scrubbing Bubbles Automatic Shower Cleaner".
How well does it work?
Well, due to my vertically challenged stature, cleaning the shower is my most dreaded task. I've tried standing on stools in order to reach and have almost wound up with my head cracked, so I gave this one a try.
It does an O.K. job, but in my opinion, it's more of a head start than a solution. You still need to get in there and scrub the higher tiles.....the worst task of all for me.....but it does keep my shower doors relatively clean.
I say buy the "Mr. Clean Reach" and some soft scrub.

Soy vs Paraffin

I'm not quite sure whether the claim that soy candles emit less toxins than paraffin candles is true or not, but what I CAN attest to is that the candles and tarts at http://www.soy-simple.com/ DEFINITELY last longer, have a stronger scent, and go out with less fuss.
Personally, I purchase both the tarts and the jar candles. I can't say ENOUGH how very satisfied I am. For the holidays, they created these "sparkle" tarts ( I tend to burn tarts more frequently than candles these days due to the 6 year old, two cats, and the dog.) and not only do the smell tremendous, but upon cooling, they slide right out of the burners. Normally, I need to place my burners in the freezer for a few minutes to pop them out.
Also, I have found that the tarts from http://www.soy-simple.com/ can be burned a number of times depending on the scent, but definitely not less than twice.
Every scent, with the exception of one (Hearth Fire.....I actually thought that there was plastic burning in my house. It took me twenty minutes to figure out the source of the smell was the tart. Duh on me!!!) is better than the next. I especially like:

Thunderstorm
Exotic Floral
All the cocktail scented tarts

There are more, but the ones above are among my favorites.
